SofTMech

SofTMech is a large and established Centre of Mathematics for Healthcare, with primary support from the EPSRC since 2016.  Our Centre consists of multiple academic, clinical and industrial partners and combines extensive expertise in mathematical, statistical and computational modelling of cardiac and cancer physiology and disease.  We have developed a range of novel mulltiscale mathematical models and statistical inference techniques applicable to heart conditions, diseases, cancer and beyond, including patient-specific medical device optimisation and modelling diseases in the human retina.     Runner Up for Liuyang Abstract Scottish Right Heart Symposium

    Congratulations to Dr Liuyang Feng on a runners' up prize for the Best Abstract at the Scottish Right Heart Symposium on 10 November for his talk on 'Whole hearted modelling with valves in a fluid-structure interaction framework'.

    Liuyang's Journey

    At the end of 2023 we said goodbye to Liuyang Feng. Liuyang started his journey as a PhD student in 2015 working on computational modelling of the mitral valve. He then became a Research Associate with SofTMech from 2019 until 2023 during which time he developed one of the first whole heart FSI models with all valves in the field. We will all miss him and wish him good luck in his new post as a Scientific Software Development Engineer.

    Digital Twin of the bladder

    Back in 2017 SofTMech awarded funding for a short feasibility study led by Dr Paul Watton of the University of Sheffield and Anne Robertson of the University of Pittsburgh, 6 years on the partnership between the the two Universities continues and has been awarded a 3.2 million National Institute of Research R01 grant to create a digital twin of the bladder - " A Digital Twin for Designing Bladder Treatment informed by Bladder Outlet Obstruction Mechanobiology (BOOM)" Full story ....

    Xiaoyu Luo has been successful in the recent EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) managed by College of Science and Engineering (IAA call) with the project "Cardiac endotypes in COVID-19: quantification and mechanisms of cardiac injury". The project team is Xiaoyu Luo, Colin Berry, Kenneth Magnion, Nick Hill, Dirk Husmeier, Hao Gao and Scott Richardson.
